Having all server components up-to-date and an active anti-virus that scans and monitors for viruses on your web hosting is critical to protect your online reputation.  Most websites sit on shared hosting with dozens, if not hundreds of other websites.  If one of these sites is compromised, it can affect the security, performance and reputation of all the other sites on that server.

You may have heard of SSL certificates.  They are preferred on websites these days as they play an important role helping ensure traffic passed between websites and internet users is safe and secure.  If you don’t have an SSL, your website will likely show up as not secure to all internet users.

Really cheap web hosting can often put the onus of security and maintenance back onto the website owner.  While having adequate server resources such as storage, speed and email accounts is now commonplace, it is also critical to maintain the website.  It is also good to know which state (or country) your website is hosted in.

Most websites are built in WordPress and other common CMS platforms and they need to have both server and plug-in updates to remain secure.  This is a task that most small businesses don’t have the resources or time to manage properly.

My First Website includes server, CMS and plug-in updates in the price of all our web hosting packages.  If an issue is ever detected with an update, we notify the client and offer assistance in getting the issue resolved.  Our websites are also hosted in our own Tier 3 data centre space in Perth to ensure fast speeds and maximum control.
